An Affordable Route into Teaching

Ms. Schroeder's 4th grade class

Graduates earn a Massachusetts Initial Teacher License and a master’s degree in education from UMass Boston.

  • Master’s degree in education

  • $20,000 stipend (pre-tax) for living expenses

  • Access to additional financial aid

  • Health benefits

  • AmeriCorps Segal Education Award

As a resident, you receive a $20,000 stipend (pre-tax), health care benefits, and a $7,395 (amount for program year 2024-25) AmeriCorps Education Award upon completion of the program.  You can apply for financial aid through UMass Boston to supplement your stipend income and cover the cost of UMass Boston tuition and fees (<$8,000).

In addition, we waive one-third of your $10,000 BTR program cost for each year you commit to the Boston Public Schools. Important note: BTR program fees are separate from UMass Boston degree costs.

Only graduates who do not complete the teaching commitment are billed for program fees—BTR does not ask for an upfront payment from residents.
