Building Partnerships

Today, 75,400 children live in the City of Boston. They and their families have more options for schooling than ever. Many attend schools that serve them well, but too many do not. Getting to where we need to be — a city that educates every child well — requires learning from the strongest schools and classrooms across the city and paying attention to serious, still-unaddressed challenges.

The Boston Plan for Excellence has convened a new, cross-sector group representing charter, parochial, independent, pilot, and traditional public schools to foster shared leadership and learning across all Boston schools.

How It Works

The Boston Schoolchildren’s Consortium includes leaders from all sectors that educate Boston children. These leaders have committed to visit one another’s schools, to learn from what works, and discuss how, together, we can create a seamless, quality school experience for every Boston student.

The Consortium will soon announce a body of shared work that will connect educators working across the city’s schools in an effort to improve outcomes for all children.

Why It Matters

The Boston Schoolchildren’s Consortium is a bold and unprecedented partnership, placing commitment to student achievement ahead of politics and the desire to learn together ahead of ideology. The inspired leadership of its members will make Boston the first city with a new, larger vision for educating its children

Though the Consortium is still in its early stages, the members have already taken action on major education reform issues affecting all children in Boston. Consortium members unanimously supported recent Massachusetts legislation that raises the cap on charter schools and supports intensive intervention in underperforming schools. Read their letter to Representative Robert DeLeo.
