Organizational Background

The Boston Teacher Residency (BTR) is the Boston Public Schools’ (BPS) teacher preparation program. Managed by the Boston Plan for Excellence (www.bpe.org), BTR is centered upon a year-long internship (the “residency”) in a BPS classroom. The participants, called Teacher Residents, spend four days each week working closely with a Mentor Teacher in a BPS classroom. They take courses intended to prepare them to become highly effective urban teachers in two summer components and during the school year on Fridays and one afternoon per week. Upon successful completion of their residency year, Residents earn a Massachusetts Initial Teacher License and a Master’s degree in education from UMASS/Boston, and all earn a dual license as a Teacher of Students with Moderate Special Needs one year later. Residents commit to teach for at least three additional years in the BPS.
