A Look at Readers’ Workshop:
Grade 9 at Burke HS
BPE’s 24-minute video features one lesson from one teacher — how to
find parts of the text in “Of Mice & Men” that create its meaning — and
her reflections on how she planned and taught the lesson, what she
watched for as it unfolded, and what she learned about her students’
responses to help her plan for the next day’s lesson.
Preparing for Workshop: Grade 1 at Lee ES
Filmed in SY2002-2003, this three-part video follows a first grade
teacher in Boston as she introduces classroom routines to increase
student independence — independence that is a prerequisite to
workshop instruction. As the year progresses, she notices dramatic
changes in the behavior of some of her most challenging students, as
well as strong gains in reading and writing for every student. Classroom
segments are interspersed with reflective interviews with the teacher and
literacy coach. The 65-minute video is in three segments: A Quick Look;
Part 1/Getting Started with Routines; Part 2/Managing Student Behavior.
Reading is Thinking!
Reading Aloud at the Jackson-Mann ES
Reading aloud “Oliver Button is a Sissy,” teacher Fran Ahearn models
thinking skills with her second graders and draws out their thinking at key points during the read aloud and at the end-of-reading share time.
Intermixed with the lesson are interviews with Ms. Ahearn in which she
discusses how she chooses a book, prepares for each read aloud, and
uses the lesson to assess students’ thinking and plan future lessons.
