With generous support from the national Fund For Teachers, the Boston Plan has been able to offer grants to BPS classroom teachers and content coaches for summer travel and study — for professional development of their own design. FFT/Boston is managed in partnership with the Boston Public Schools and the Boston Teachers Union.

FFT/Boston applicants must be full-time teachers or content coaches with a minimum of three years teaching experience in BPS and a commitment to continue to teach in BPS. The application requires a detailed explanation of the proposed learning experience, its benefits to the teacher, its capacity to improve student learning, and its projected benefits for curriculum, colleagues and school community. Individuals may request up to $5,000; teams up to $10,000.

To date, almost 250 BPS staff have won grants totaling $750,000 for projects as diverse as studying painting in Tahiti, exploring the rain forest in Costa Rica, volunteering at a sHennigan teacher and FFT grant winner Paul Sedgwickchool in Tanzania, touring the children’s theatre circuit in New York City, and presenting at the International ChemEd Conference in Vancouver.

Applications for summer 2008 grants were made online through the national Fund For Teachers and closed on January 31, 2008.
