How the Money Works

The Boston Teacher Residency financial structure is based on two principles:

  1. Boston needs an affordable, high-quality path to becoming an effective teacher
  2. Boston needs to provide an incentive for people to stay and teach in Boston

The intent of the financial structure is to allow people at different points in life and with varying financial resources to enter the profession without incurring substantial debt. To that end, there are three elements to the BTR financials:

  1. Stipend. Teacher Residents receive $11,400 during the year for their service to the host school.

  2. BTR Program Tuition. BTR charges a $10,000 tuition for its program. However, Teacher Residents are automatically loaned that full amount upon admission to the program. BTR then forgives one third for every year that graduates teach in the Boston Public Schools. This tuition is meant to provide an incentive for people to stay teaching in Boston.

  3. UMass Tuition. Total tuition costs for the University of Massachusetts/Boston master's degree are approximately $4,000. Teacher Residents are eligible for student loans through UMass. Residents receive an AmeriCorps Education Award upon successful completion of their service worth $4,725. Many Residents use this Education Award to pay back UMass master's degree tuition loans.
