The MTEL and Teacher Licensure
In order to become certified in Massachusetts, you must pass the appropriate sections of the Massachusetts Test for Educator Licensure (MTEL).

Elementary candidates should take the Communication & Literacy Skills Test and the General Curriculum Test. To receive the Elementary License, Teacher Residents will also need to pass the Foundations of Reading Test, but that occurs later in the year, after having completed the appropriate coursework in the program.

Middle school candidates should take the Communication & Literacy Skills Test and the appropriate subject area test (math, biology, etc.). If you have questions about what test to take, please contact BTR for guidance.
