Teachers Resident Essentials

As a part of its effort to create classrooms in which every child can succeed, the Boston Public Schools runs the Boston Teacher Residency (BTR), a 13-month program to recruit, prepare, and license teachers to work in the city's schools. BTR is modeled after a medical residency in which aspiring doctors receive practical training in hospitals in conjunction with rigorous coursework.

BTR combines the best of theory and research with the best of practical training by placing Teacher Residents with a Mentor Teacher for a full school year. Teacher Residents participate in rigorous Master's level coursework centered around the Boston Public Schools' Dimensions of Effective Teaching during two summer components, and after-school and all day on Fridays during the school year. Teacher Residents graduate from the program with a Massachusetts Initial Teacher License in their primary content area and a Master's degree in Education awarded by the University of Massachusetts/Boston. They also work toward dual licensure in Special Education.

The $10,000 tuition for the program is loaned to Teacher Residents in full and forgiven over three years teaching in Boston's public schools. Residents receive a stipend of $11,400 for the year and are eligible to apply for student loans through the University of Massachusetts/Boston. Residents are also eligible for an AmeriCorps Education Award following their year of service.

The Boston Teacher Residency is a joint initiative of the Boston Public Schools and the Boston Plan for Excellence.
