Arlene Hijara joined BTR in May 2009. Previously, she worked with the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education as an Engish as a Second Language (ESL) specialist then English language learning and special education coordinator.  For eleven years, she worked in Northampton Public Schools as a tutor, teacher of the deaf, and special education coordinator. Before she immigrated to the US in 1994, Dr. Hijara served with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees as an ESL teacher, curriculum development associate, teacher supervisor and Deputy Officer for Teacher Training. She spent seven years of living and working in resettlement training camps for Vietnamese, Cambodian, and Laotian refugees across Southeast Asia. Dr. Hijara holds an EdD in Teacher Education and Curriculum Studies and CAGS in Bilingual, ESL, and Multicultural Education from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
